Creating the Climate for Environment Sustainability
As the lurking dangers of global climate change become alarming, the Art of Living has taken up several holistic and multi-pronged initiatives to ensure environment sustainability. The goal of these initiatives is to take actions to protect the environment and encourage practices and lifestyles that nurture it. Combining awareness with effective actions, it has initiated several mass movements aimed at ensuring environment sustainability, which is one of the UN Millennium Development Goals. GM GOODS-GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOODS

Genetically modified (GM) foods are foods derived from genetically modified organisms. The DNA of genetically modified organisms has been modified through genetic engineering, unlike similar food organisms developed through the conventional genetic modification of selective breeding (plant breeding and animal breeding) or mutation breeding. GM foods were first put on the market in the early 1990s. Typically, genetically modified foods are transgenic plant products: soybean, corn, canola, and cotton seed oil, but animal products have been developed. For example, in 2006 a pig engineered to produce omega-3 fatty acids through the expression of a roundworm gene was controversiallyproducedResearchers have also developed a genetically-modified breed of pigs that are able to absorb plant phosphorus more efficiently, and as a consequence the phosphorus content of their manure is reduced by as much as 60%. Critics have objected to GM foods on several grounds, including perceived safety issues.ecological concerns, and economic concerns raised by the fact that these organisms are subject to intellectual property law.

OZONE LAYER-GLOBAL WARMING

The ozone layer is a layer in Earth's atmosphere which contains relatively high concentrations of ozone (O3). This layer absorbs 93-99% of the sun's high frequency ultraviolet light, which is potentially damaging to life on earth.[1] Over 91% of the ozone in Earth's atmosphere is present here.[1] It is mainly located in the lower portion of the stratosphere from approximately 10 km to 50 km above Earth, though the thickness varies seasonally and geographically.[2] The ozone layer was discovered in 1913 by the French physicists Charles Fabry and Henri Buisson. Its properties were explored in detail by the British meteorologist G. M. B. Dobson, who developed a simple spectrophotometer (the Dobsonmeter) that could be used to measure stratospheric ozone from the ground. Between 1928 and 1958 Dobson established a worldwide network of ozone monitoring stations which continues to operate today. The "Dobson unit", a convenient measure of the total amount of ozone in a column overhead, is named in his honor. For more on global warming visit 'issues,news'......

MISSION GREEN EARTH - HARITHAM '09

As part of eradicating poverty in the whole world, United nations set millennium goals in which environmental protection activities were highlighted as prior concern. To achieve the goals, Art of living foundation is conducting world wide program in 170 countries.

In India, planting 10 crore plants is set as target. Forest department and other governmental and nongovernmental agencies join in this campaign. In this second year in the month of south west monsoon season, 53000 plants will be planted in households in the state of Kerala through various voluntary agencies.
This will be documented in such a manner that each plant will be given a serial number, name, owner’s name and address and phone number, location of the plant, will be documented and will be verified its growth seasonally.
In addition to this another 47000 plants will be planted in public places with the same type of documentation. In this way a total of one lack plants will be planted in the state. Kerala forest department is collaborating with this program. Local bodies, NGOs and voluntary workers join this program.
